S is for Seuss! {Mommy School Unit}

It's time for a new Mommy School Packet!

And it's a good one!

Download is available at the end of the post.

I have always loved Dr. Seuss books!  I have collected so many through the years. I have always known that I wanted to do a Dr. Seuss-themed Mommy School unit. I'm planning to spend the next 2-3 weeks teaching all about Dr. Seuss books!  And with The Lorax movie coming out, I think a mommy/son date to the movies will be in order!

This packet came along with a dilemma.  Each time I create a new packet, I obtain specific permission to use the graphics or clip art.  There are many companies such as DJ Inkers and My Grafico that have very generous terms of use when it comes to using their graphics for educational use.  I have spoken with the owners of these companies to obtain specific permission.  However, finding Dr. Seuss-specific clip art that I could share with you was a bit tricky.  Instead, I opted to offer a wealth of ideas centered on Dr. Seuss books with some helpful templates and patterns that I created myself.   I hope you understand!

But not to worry!  There are still 72 pages of fabulous ideas, all centered on some of my favorite Dr. Seuss Books!

Here are some of the concepts covered:

Letter of the Week: S

Number of the Week:  3

Shape of the Week: Diamond

Theme of the Week:  Dr. Seuss

Song of the Week:  Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Here are just a few sneak peeks:

Goldfish graphing to go along with One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

Green eggs and ham ABC's to go along with Green Eggs and Ham.

Alphabet stamping activity to go along with Dr. Seuss's ABC.

And of course there are many more surprises in there!

  14. This website is truly amazing, Alison. I have recently been in a debate with myself about being a stay at home mom. One of my arguments with myself is not having anything “planned” like what you have listed here or not knowing a general direction to take with my daughter (she is 10 mos old so a little young for most things). Guess I just lost that argument! Thank you for sharing all of your hard work with us!!!!

  15. So glad I came across your site, I’m always looking for things to do with my two little ones, 2 yr old girl and 4 yr old boy that will stimulate and help them learn. Dr Seuss are our favourite books and we are starting to get a bit of a collection so far, luckily we have a few of the books you mention in your unit!! Can’t wait to get started. Thank you so much Alison, from my family down under. 🙂

I am from Brazil and I really love you ideas! Not only for Parties but also for my classes. You see, I am a preschool teacher and some of your activities go really well in the classroom. Specially these ones because my kids also love Dr. Seuss.
    Be always creative and happy!!!!

  26. This is such an awesome idea! I’m working on creating similar packets to use with my children this summer, with various weekly themes {i.e. Rainbows, Beach Days, Fun on the Farm, etc}!

  27. Hi there! Just came across your awesome page (I was originally looking at your Mickey party ideas), and was curious if you had any recommendations on which packet to begin with? I think these are all fantastic. My (almost) 3 year old hasn’t spent much time on the alphabet, but I’m assuming it would make sense to start with an “A” packet? Or do you go more with what’s going on at that time of the year (like H is for Halloween)? This is so wonderful… I’ve spent a lot of time looking for toddler books with educational activities, but haven’t found anything as great as this. I actually am a middle school teacher (staying home currently due to being stationed overseas), but I’ve been seriously clueless when it comes to teaching the basics! I’m used to getting the kids when they’re at that age that they already know their ABC’s and multiplication tables (well, MOST of them), LOL! Anywho, sorry for rambling and so pleased to have stumbled upon your site! Any advice would be great 🙂

  28. Awesome packets!!! Great job!! Thank you so much for sharing!!! Have a great day and thank you again!!!

  29. thanks so much for sharing your ideas. i cant wait to start my own homecare with 3yr olds. you are a God send! God bless you more!

  30. Hi! I really loved your apple worksheet and the moon worksheet as well. I see that you have the letter and a picture of something that starts with that letter and at the bottom 2 sets of lines to trace the dotted letter. My question is do you have a page like this for every letter of the alphabet? I am a preschool teacher and would use all of them ! Thanks so much for your ideas and talent! Caroline

    • Hi Caroline! I create those letter practicing sheets with each packet I create. However, I don’t have them in a separate download. Although… it’s a great idea! Perhaps once the entire alphabet is finished, I will make a download just for those letter practicing sheets.

  32. I have been looking everywhere for something to do with my young toddler! He isn’t quite ready for an actual pre-school program but needs to do something to keep him from getting into constant trouble! I think this will be perfect! I love the idea of taking a month to work on one letter, number, color, shape, that is such an awesome idea! I am completely going to share your site with my home-school group!

I love all of your packets they are great!! I was wondering is there a packet for each letter of the alphabet?

  35. I linked to your site in my latest post:

Let me know if there are any issues! I’ve subscribed and am looking forward to more great ideas:)

  36. My daughter just turned 2 and I love all your work that you have so graciously shared. I really want to start incorporating some learning time every day, bu I’m not sure how much I should do with her…if that makes sense. Do you have any advice on how to go about starting with her? I guess I feel like some of the things here, she isn’t ready for…but then I’m sure she is capable of more than I think she is.

  37. Alison,
Seriously these packets are amazing! I have loved using them to teach my son (and as a fellow Early Childhood Educator I know how much time they must take!). I noticed that there isn’t a packet for every letter, which is fine, I just thought before I go and make my own I would ask if you have them somewhere else.

Thank you SO much for putting these together, I haven’t taught for 6 years but these packets help me remember why I love it! I am thinking of starting up my own preschool and this makes it seem a little more manageable! Thanks again,

  38. Hi …just seeing your blog after a friend recommended it. Thanks for all your hard work and being willing to share your hours of labor!!! Is there a particular order ?

    • Hi Joy. All of the packets are thematic, so they are meant to be taught whenever you’d like to teach a particular theme. I believe that ABC order might be useful for us as adults, but not necessary for the kiddos. 🙂 So “G is for Green” would work around St. Patrick’s Day and “W is for Winter” could be used around winter, etc. There is a particular number and letter that corresponds with each unit, so they will not necessarily be taught ABC/numerical order. See my “Mommy School” tab for more info! Have fun!

  39. I am in awe at this blog and the wealth of creativity and knowledge found here! I am a stay at home mom with two little girls, the oldest is almost 4 and have been wanting to have more of a structured teaching/learning time every day with her. Being a nurse but able to stay home while my husband is in grad school, money is tight and my creativity is limited. I feel so blessed to come across this on Pinterest. And it is free?!?!? Amazing! Alison, you are extremely generous to offer this to those who couldn’t get it otherwise and help our little ones learn and grow! It is inadequate to say thank you but just know from a fellow mother concerned for my children’s education, bravo!!!!!

  40. Do you have packets for each Letter? I love this Dr. Suess theme

  41. thank you for them.
