Photo Tile Coasters {Using Resin}

Last Christmas I almost had a breakdown...

We had just moved in to our home the month before, but I didn't want to let that prevent us from having the holliest jolliest Christmas.  My intentions were good.  I wanted to make Christmas special for everyone, but I learned the hard way that I should have been planning ahead!!

And that's how it happened.  I created a monster.  I have been thinking about Christmas since April. Gift ideas are always swirling in my head.  (And I'm almost done with this year's Christmas cards!)

Well, with this project I created an anniversary gift AND a Christmas gift.  But don't tell.... these gifts were cheap.  Like really cheap.

While I was in Utah, my sweet cousin Michelle showed me a couple of projects using resin.  She even sent me home with some resin to try out on my own!  So I quickly put it to the test.  And let me just tell you--I am in love!  I can see more resin in my creative future!

Here's how I made these photo coasters...

I started out with a trip to Home Depot.  These 4x4 tiles were only 19 cents each!  It doesn't get much cheaper than that!  And I bought a package of 72 felt mounting circles for about $3.50.  Not too shabby!

Next, I ordered some photos.

Only 13 cents a print at Costco!  I cut the prints down to 4x4 so they would each fit on a tile.

I used a regular old Elmer's glue stick to paste each picture onto the tiles.  (I love glue sticks--you can't leave fingerprints with glue sticks!!)

I won't give a full tutorial on using resin because each product is a little different.  I used Envirotex Lite, and I followed the instructions  on their website very precisely.  I have heard that the key to using resin is precision. So I was careful to follow everything to a T!  And it worked beautifully!  I recommend buying this at Hobby Lobby, where you can use a 40% off coupon.  Just a little bit of this will last forever!!  Split the cost with a friend, and you'll be set with resin projects for a long time!

After mixing the resin with the hardener, I just poured it on!  I spread it out using popsicile sticks.  My hubby helped me use a blow torch (on low) to get out the bubbles that pop up in the first 15 minutes or so.  (I've received a lot of comments asking if you have to use a blow torch.  The answer is NO!  You can simply blow through a straw, blowing out the bubbles in the very same way. My husband preferred to look like a hotshot with a blow torch!)

Then it took them a full 24 hours to harden up!  In fact, it took 72 hours to get completely hard.

Once dry, I mounted 4 of the felt circles on the bottom of each tile so they would slide easily on wood without scratching!

All done!
I have to tell you how much I love the hard, smooth glossiness of resin!  It's incredible--almost glasslike!

I made a set of 6 coasters as an anniversary gift for my hubby.  I used black and white wedding photos.  I can't look at my wedding photos too much!  Love them!  So hopefully when Mr. Oopsey Daisy is drinking his Cokes, he'll appreciate the coaster underneath!

Now these are stinkin' cute!!

I made another set of coasters using photos of the sweet grandchildren.  These will make the perfect gift for my parents for Christmas.   I wouldn't be surprised if my Mom puts these up on an easel instead of using them as drink coasters!

Tie them up with a bow, and you have the perfect gift!

Two sets of coasters (and enough supplies for a third!)--for only $6.50 total.  That's about $2.19 per set!

My hubby is so proud of my frugality!  And I'm proud of my gift planning!

Happy weekend!

EDITED TO ADD:

I have had several people ask if they could use mod podge and then spray a clear sealant over the top.  I have never tried this.  However, this won't have the hard, glassy effect that resin will have.  I would still be concerned that this method may not be completely waterproof. But feel free to try it!  I wanted to try resin with this project because of the hard glassiness it would provide.

Wednesday’s Wowzers: Little Man Is Growing Up!

Just yesterday, a very large package arrived at our door.  I was kind of excited, but dreaded it at the same time.

At this very moment, Little Man is sleeping in his big boy bed for the very first time.  My baby boy is officially growing up. Yes, we could have made this transition much, much earlier.  But honestly, I don't think I was quite ready.   But there he is, sleeping away like he was meant to always sleep there.

Now I have a toddler's room to make over into a big boy's room!

In the midst of moving furniture and doing laundry, I've had the chance to look at a few amazing posts!

First up.  How amazing is this bed nook?!  I would love to do all my blogging right there.  In that cozy bed.  Looking out the windows.  You've got to see this post with your own eyes.  Run right over to Tidbits from the Tremaynes.

Positively Splendid is always so refreshing.  I love her ceiling medallion clock!  So creative as always, Amy!

Kierste from Brown Paper Packages is hosting a fun "Back 2 Basics" series for Back to School time.  I love this sweet "Apple for the Teacher" idea.  I'm ready to dive into the computer screen and take a bite of this caramel apple!

I love so many adorable details from this Pinwheel and Polka-Dot Party at Lemon Tree Creations.  Let me just tell you a few details that caught my eye.  I love spelling out words like "Celebrate" and "birthday" with Scrabble tiles.  Brilliant!  PLUS Tiffany created an entire photo collage by pinning pictures to chicken wire using clothespin. I find myself going back to this post time and time again to soak up every detail!

I just discovered this post from Grey Luster Girl.  Can you believe she created this adorable bow shirt from a men's polo?!  What an amazing refashion!  I guess I won't be forcing my hubby to give away his old polo shirts--I'll be keeping them for ME!

How adorable is this "A is for Apple embroidery?!  Perfect for back to school time.  Go check it out at Little Lulu's Nest!

Sheesh.  I can never get enough pillows!  I thought I'd had my fill.  And then I saw this Mondo Pom Pom Pillow.  Isn't it gorgeous?? Susan from Living With Punks is the smartie pants behind this one.  It's stunning.

It's true that I've had insects on the brain lately (thanks to our latest Mommy School unit!).  But I was completely drawn to Bee In Our Bonnet's amazing ladybug party!  I adore this entire party!  The games and decor were amazing... but one of my favorite details is these ladybug pretzels!

What are you lovin' right now??

Any projects that have caught your eye lately?

Summer Camp Wrap Up!

But for now... here is the recap!

I hope you enjoyed this series!

I have a feeling I'll continue this series again next year!

I is for Insects {Mommy School}

Something about back-to-school time renews my own excitement for Mommy School!  After a lazy summer, I have decided to really fire up my engines and get our Mommy School going!

Here's the latest and greatest printable Mommy School packet...

This packet is MASSIVE.  We're talking a whopping 80 pages!

I have been sleeping and breathing BUGS for the last week.  It's kind of funny because Little Man has always been a little squeemish when it comes to creepy crawlies.  But I'm determined that by the end of this unit, he'll like at least a few bugs!

Are you curious what's inside??

Letter of the Week:  I

Number of the Week:  10

Color of the Week:  Black

Song of the Week:  I'm Bringing Home My Baby Bumblebee

Theme of the Week:  Insects

I am not giving away all my secrets with this packet, but here are just a few teasers (All downloads are available at the end of the post):

These are ALWAYS one of our favorites... bug action cards!  We'll be practicing our best "buggy" moves!

"Count the stripes on the bees" activity.

A little ladybug math... match the numeral with the correct number of ladybug dots.

"I is for..." coloring pages/letter tracing.

And there is much MUCH more!

The arts and crafts section of this packet is enormous.  And I found some extraordinary songs and fingerplays!

Sunday’s Snippets: Family Portraits

Hello, my friends!  Happy weekend!

I can't wait any longer.  I have been so excited to show off our latest family pictures!  While we were in Utah, a very talented friend of ours agreed to take our family portraits--the very first "official" portraits in 2 years!  I can finally take down our portraits of our wee family with a tiny babe and replace it with this handsome grown-up toddler.

It was a special opportunity for us to take these pictures in Orem, Utah.  This is where my handsome hubby and I met and dated!  We even took our engagement photos just a few hundred feet away, near Utah Lake ~ a spot near and dear to both of us! Now look at us 4 years later!  Our little family has grown!

Of course I'm always a bit critical of myself in pics.  I would definitely re-do the outfit and hair if I could.  But despite all that, I think our photographer made us look GOOD!

All photo credit belongs to Glenn Pearson of LDS Photographer.com.

My sweet family

I don't know who loves the train track shot more--me or Little Man.  He got to see a real choo-choo race right by as we prepared for the shot!

Mr. and Mrs. Daisy

Look out ladies, this young stallion is MINE!

Little Man is growing up!

I think these shots capture Little Man's personality just perfectly.  A little sweet.  A little NUTS!

Crazy Little Man

Like I said:  Just a little crazy!

A little family fun

Could this moment get any sweeter?

Love these boys!

Thanks for letting me share my family with you.  These boys are my life!

I highly recommend Glenn with LDS Photographer.com if you are in seeking fabulous photography in Utah!

Guess what's coming up tomorrow?
A new Mommy School packet... and this one is stinkin' cute if I do say so myself!

Dinosaur Play Day {A Couple of Craft Addicts}

Today is bittersweet for me.
I am sad that today is the last day of our Summer Camp series.  Can you believe it??
But I am also thrilled to feature on of my new favorite blogging friends.
I love A Couple of Craft Addicts!  I met Heather at Creative Estates, and she is  a gem!!  She's sharing a fab idea today!
*******************
I'm so happy to be participating in Summer Camp!

I'm Heather from A Couple of Craft Addicts. I'm a wife to a wonderful husband and mommy to a sassy two-year-old girl. My dear friend Jessica and I enjoy sharing kids crafts, recipes, sewing tips, and lots of fun DIY projects at A Couple of Craft Addicts.

I am a big fan of Oopsey Daisy and had the pleasure of meeting Alison earlier this year. She is darling in person! Thanks for letting us join in on the fun this summer!

My daughter loves to read books. Most times when she is nowhere to be found, I can usually discover her sitting in her room surrounded by piles of books as she flips through the pages. Sometimes I spy on her reading stories to her dolls. Regardless of the book she is reading I typically hear the same story - "Once upon a time there was a princess. The end."

In addition to being girly and obsessed with princesses, my daughter is really into dinosaurs! We absolutely adore Jane Yolen's dinosaur books, and we were really excited to share a fun story and play date with my daughter's favorite friends this week.

This book is about naughty dinosaurs that know just the right way to express love to their mommies and daddies. We invited a few friends over to share our book and have some fun.

I used cute dinosaur printables from Smitten Blog Designs to add the dino decor to our play date.

Free printable party pack found here

The printable party pack did not include a non specific banner so I used the images to create my own.

We had a lot of fun dinosaur related food! To create the food labels I printed directly onto address labels and then stuck them on folded cardstock. I used the cupcake toppers from the party pack to make them cuter.

Our play date was before lunch so I tried to avoid sugary snacks for the kids.
Lava Juice - fruit punch
Dinosaur Fruit Snacks - gummies in PERFECT dinosaur packaging purchased from my local grocery store
Miniature Dinosaur Eggs - grapes
Dinosaur Bones - pretzels
Swamp Dip - avocado and cottage cheese dip with tortilla chips

Our friends at the play date ranged in age from six months to five years old. I thought a coloring craft would easily take care of the age gap. I purchased small wooden dinosaurs from Michaels and decided to use crayons instead of paint or markers to avoid the mess. Since our book was about expressing love, I put out heart stickers to embellish the dinosaurs. Glue sticks were popular at the crafting table but I'm not sure I saw any googly eyes actually glued to the dinosaurs!

In honor of school starting soon I gave each guest a dinosaur notebook as a thank you for coming to our play date. I made the notebooks using generic brand books (only 15 cents each!), animal print paper, address labels, and the cupcake toppers from the printable party pack. The texture of the paper made these really fun!

We are sad to see summer coming to an end but this was the perfect occasion for a play date!

Thanks again for letting us participate!

Giveaway from Idaho Mom of 2 {Closed}

This giveaway is now closed!  Congratulations Jackie!

Happy Thursday!

It is one of my greatest pleasures as a blogger to promote quality handmade shops.  Today I am thrilled to promote a talented {and sweet!} lady with some products that I truly believe in!

JoLynn is the owner of this adorable etsy shop, and she offers some fabulous products!  Her specialty just happens to be chore charts.  What a great idea!

I am a firm believer in chore charts... Perhaps because I always used them growing up!

I love JoLynn's adorable picture chore cards because they are perfect for children of all ages.  And these charts can be customized for YOU and your family's needs!

This chart is 10 x 12 chart with 6 hooks for chores.  I love that you can customize your very own chore cards!  If you want horizontal instead of vertical, check this out...

This chart is 14x14 with 2 names and 5 hooks.

Totally not a chore chart, but I absolutely adore JoLynn's Pottery Barn-inspired vintage typewriter keys.

The amazing JoLynn is offering one Oopsey Daisy reader a $30 credit to her etsy shop.  You can apply this money to anything in her shop!

Here is how you can win:

(Please leave a separate comment for each entry.)

1.  Do a little window shopping at IdahoMomof2. Let us know what you would spend the money on if you won!

2.  Become a follower of Oopsey Daisy or let me know you already are.  That's it!

If you are itching to buy something now, go for it!  JoLynn will offer 15% off everything by using the code oopseydaisy11.  Time to go shopping!

This giveaway will end on Wednesday, August 17 at midnight.

Giveaway winner will be announced via Facebook and Twitter.

Good luck!

Wednesday’s Wowzers: Summer Is Dwindling!

I am finally facing the cold hard facts that even though it's blistering hot right outside, summer is dwindling.  I am still kind of in denial.  I don't want to believe it.  We haven't done nearly enough for this sunny season to be over!

So the next few weeks, I have ordered us to have family fun just about every day of the week! Even yesterday, my husband came along with us to our favorite park to enjoy the train ride and the wading river.

I think I'm becoming the Summer Fun Nazi!

As summer turns into fall (and that seems to happen even more quickly in the blogging world!), here are some fun projects that are sure to inspire:

I am IN LOVE with this ruler wreath from The Polkadot Chair. Isn't this perfect for back-to-school time?!  I love how it resembles a sunburst mirror.  This is just plain genius.

I have probably looked at these embellished gift bags a dozen times since first spotting them on Miss Lovie.  Straight up eye candy!  I love all the different possibilities--bows, flowers, ruffles, and more!  Great idea!

I am in total awe of Kendra from My Insanity.  Her ABC Birthday for her little guy was amazingly awesome!  Just take a look at this rainbow block cake.  I am super impressed with all of the little details!

Just drop everything right now.  Head right on over to Little Lucy Lu where you can see Bec's amazing Mom Cave.  I am just plain jealous of her creative space!  All of that storage is ah-MAZ-ing.

Here's another great idea for back to school!  Rook No. 17 created these darling vintage lunchbox notes.  And they are printable, so you can make your own for your little guy or gal.

Now these make me think of many happy childhood days watching Smurfs!  How adorable are these Smurfs pops from Munchkin Munchies?!

Tam from Sew Dang Cute Crafts has been working hard on her son's nursery.  I had the pleasure of seeing it in person while I was in Utah, and it is seriously "so dang cute!" I love how she spruced up an old crib and chest of drawers.  And her paint color choices were perfect.

What great ideas have you seen this week??

Let's hear it!
