Popcorn & Bear Masks {Smashed Peas & Carrots}

Happy day!
It's Friday!
Alright friends, you are going to LOVE my guest today:  Miss Maggie from Smashed Peas and Carrots!  She chose one of my all-time favorite books ever!  She is incredibly talented, so enjoy her creativity!!
Hi!  My name is Maggie from Smashed Peas and Carrots.  I'm so excited to be here today!!  I'm a momma to three little ones, 4 and under, and over at my blog I love to share my mommy adventures!  I also share lots of my DIY craft and sewing tutorials, delicious family friendly recipes and lots of fun projects to do with you little ones that won't break the bank.  I own an Etsy shop of the same name, Smashed Peas and Carrots, where I sell beautifully handmade children's clothing and accessories for momma!
When Alison asked me to be a part of the Summer Camp Series I had to say yes!  We love reading books at our house and we have such a collection that I almost feel like our books are taking over our house!  We are seriously running out of places to keep them but I think that's a pretty good problem to have if you ask me!
The book I want to share with you all today is 'Popcorn' by Frank Asch

This is one of my most favorite books ever!  My siblings and I used to sit and read it all the time when we were kids.  Can you believe that this is the same book we would read all those years ago!  It's in pretty good shape still don't you think?  My parents dug it out of the basement and sent it to me when oldest, Noah, was an itty bitty baby!
This book is about a little bear cub named Sam who has been trusted to stay home alone while his parents go out to a Halloween Party.  While his parents are gone, Sam calls all his little friends over to have their own Halloween party.  Each friend comes over dressed in a costume and brings Sam a treat.  The catch is that they each bring Sam the same treat...Popcorn!  During the party, Sam and his friends start getting hungry so they decide to pop up all the popcorn and that is when trouble begins!
'There was so much popcorn, it filled the whole kitchen.'
Now Sam and his friends are forced to eat every last kernel of popcorn to help hide the evidence of the Halloween party from Sam's parents.  When his parents return home later that night, Sam is in bed sleeping.  They wake him to tell him they are home and that they brought him a treat.  Can you guess what it was?  POPCORN!
{Eloise is not loving the popcorn she grabbed, thank goodness because she shouldn't be eating it!}
The first thing we did to start off our afternoon of story book fun was to pop up some popcorn and sit together and read the book aloud.  Frank Asch is really a great illustrator and the pictures are super fun to look at, it's neat to look at each scene in the book and talk about what is going on  🙂
On a fun side note, a pretty cool thing about Frank Asch is that he has a website (here) where he has animated a few of his books and he actually narrates them!  Popcorn is one of the books on the site.  My kids love to watch/listen/read along with Frank Asch...it's really pretty cool!
When we were done reading I thought it would be fun to make Bear masks for the kids to decorate so they could pretend they were little bears going to Sam's Halloween party.  I drew bear faces on card stock, cut out the faces and the eyes and let the kids color away.  If you would like, you can find a template for the Bear Mask Here.
They kids ended up with some pretty colorful bear faces!
Then I grabbed a few wooden craft sticks and some tape and taped them to the back of the masks!
Grrr!  Check out these bears!!
The kids picked out costumes, they are wearing a princess cape and a super hero cape I had made a while ago for dress up fun and Eloise wore a construction hat, and they pretended they were the little bear cubs who attended Sam's Halloween party.
Of course there is always lots of running around and giggling at any fun party!
And you always find a baby construction worker climbing the slide at a rocking' party too, right?
I thought so 😉
Thanks for having me Alison, this was so fun!! I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer!
